Pig production (which has been badly hit in recent years following Foot and Mouth Disease and Classical Swine Fever, resulting in a drop of about 50% in production since the late 1990s) is dominated by a small number of large companies producing large numbers of pigs to contract specifications. These large corporations often own the pigs, the feed mills, the abattoirs and the processing plants. The industry depends on "pig pyramids" to produce high quality breeding stock.

Pig farms try to reduce disease risk by restricting movements onto farms and only retaining production pigs for a short period of time. Piglets for commercial production are weaned at approximately 4 weeks of age and sent to a weaner/breeder unit for finishing. These pigs then move to slaughter at 20-26 weeks of age.   Shipping Info
